Elementary School (K-5)

Our elementary school curriculum is designed to teach students at the grammar stage of learning.  Four key elements make up our elementary curriculum.  The first element is the use of songs, chants, and jingles to memorize foundational facts and information in math, phonics, grammar, history, and Bible.  The second element is story; time spent immersed in quality children’s literature and other narratives from the Bible and history.  The third primary element is embodied learning; the experience we create through rhythms, practices, traditions, and routines in the classroom. Finally, the wonder and curiosity sparked by bringing these elements together.  Our small class sizes and supportive faculty make for an ideal learning environment in which students are encouraged to view every aspect of their education and lives as a means to glorify God.  Chapel, recess, celebrations with upper school classes, community service, and field trips contribute to fostering in students a desire for truth, goodness, and beauty.

An Overview of Our Curriculum

• English: We place a strong emphasis on helping our students grasp the proper use of the English language. Specific time is dedicated to the daily study of:

• Reading: using the phonics and guided reading methods of teaching.

• Literature:  the reading aloud and narration (telling back) of quality children’s literature.

• Grammar: learning the rules of our language through memorization of rules, modeling, and guided practice.

• Penmanship: stressing neatness and the mechanics of writing including manuscript and cursive.

• Spelling: developing the skill of spelling through application of phonics rules, repetition, and application

• Writing: following the path to becoming proficient writers through copy-work, dictation, analysis and imitation of excellent writing, and guided practice.

• Math: Our program is built around the Singapore Math curriculum with an emphasis on memorization of foundational facts.

• History: Lower elementary students use quality children’s literature to explore the concept of a timeline and the idea that they are part of history.  Our second through fifth grade students use the Veritas Press timeline cards and songs, Story of the World, and quality literature to follow the timeline of history from Creation through 1815.

• Science: Our goal is to cultivate a sense of wonder for the beauty and wisdom of God within His creation through the observation and study of local nature and the foundational study of biology, earth science, chemistry, and physics.

• Bible: The focus of our Bible program is the story of God’s work of redemption, centered in Christ, as is revealed in the Scriptures. Children will emerge with a foundation in the Gospel through Scripture reading and memorization, learning of hymns, and memorization of catechism questions and answers.

• Enrichment Courses: Special courses, including art, music, nature journaling, and physicaleducation, each taught by our experienced and innovative teachers, are included in our students’ weekly schedules.
